Interview with Bondage Fairies

«Who wants to be Clark Kent when you can be Superman?»

During their eleven years history Bondage Fairies became the real synonym of modern Swedish music. Silent and incredibly laconic. But instead of this blowing a certain mysticism which tastes like light trembling from loudspeakers. This incredible feeling which blows to you by the band-members images, who permanently appear on public in masks of some kind of superheroes-antagonists or by their unusual music which fit to a tee on Scott Pilgrim’s OST. That what become a foundation of what the band-members call “death-punk” or “laser-rock”.

For all of the world Bondage Fairies become the one band which ideally united socially important topics in such soundtrack to computer game of our life. But instead of their extremely popular status BF cease work on any material, releasing their last single 9 years ago. And ended their splendid concerts which played the last of them 15th of November 2015.

We managed to talk with vocalist of the band and a real legend – Elvis Creep. In this interview he told us about stage images of Bondage Fairies, process of recording their past and disclose the mystery of band’s coming works.

............................................................................................................

The history of your band started at 2005 – band was formed and you released your debut album – «What You Didn’t Know When You Hired Me». You recorded this album only with two members – can you say something about recording process ?

«What You Didn’t Know When You Hired Me» was mostly recorded by myself at home with the worst shit equipment money can't buy... all the songs were already recorded once we got the opportunity to make a real vinyl/cd album so we re-recorded bass and guitar and some of the vocals in fashionpolice studios in Stockholm. I think that was a good thing, recording guitar directly plugged into the pink microphone hole on an hewlett packard computer won't ever be Beatles quality.

I read a lot of comments about your second album – some of fans think about it like falling from the top, others found there a lot of new. How you can to describe this work?

I guess the kids are right. One general rule that fits all bands/artists is that the first album always is the best. That is if your a fan of the music, but if you're the one behind the music you usually think the other way around, i.e. latest = best. In our case we are not a band/artist, we are scientists. So therefore in my honest opinion I think that our next coming album will be the best, then the first and second album on a shared second place and the third album on third place.. our self titled third album is the least of my favorites.

During the history of your band you’ve changed a lot of members and how do you think – was it good for your work ? For example – when you’ve realized your debut album band consisted of two members. Now there is four members. Do you think such changes helped you to extend your horizons?

To the part of creating songs it doesn’t matter that much as I write the music alone, but live I'm pretty damn sure it makes a lot more sense to be 4 instead of 2. Our shows become more interesting with more people and the guys are professionals. For me it’s also very nice to not having to play the guitar, by not playing guitar live gives me one and sometimes two hands free for more important activities, such as drinking.

However your music style didn’t changed – such techno rhythms, synthesizer. For me it’s something like techno version of grunge. But instead of it – you become very popular in the Eastern Europe. How do you think – what’s the reasons for this?

I don't know, I guess internet is responsible for that. Internet and the reptilian agenda. Maybe also because the Eastern Europeans have generally better taste in things. Techno grunge? We ourselfs call it death punk or laser rock.

And by the way – a lot of people I know, had a good emotions after visiting your concert. What was the most noticeable thing during your tour in our region?

A straight couple have sexual intercourse during one of our calmer songs. In general people seem to enjoy our freak show. I like that. Maybe there should be a book about it. Or a movie. As long as people are happy we are too.

I know that you have a page at our social network «VK», can you say some words about your fans and relations with them?

They are in general very sweet, they congratulate us when we have birthdays, ask questions, draw paintings and so on. We enjoy to meet our fans and try to be as nice as we can when we meet them face to mask. I used to reply to all emails on «Vk» before, but after a big time away from internet there was to many to handle. Someday when I'm ill I will try to take care of this. I'm not very active on any of the social networks anymore as I find internet pretty boring and have started to enjoy real life a bit more.

Why you choose such a bright image for all the members?

I'm not sure of what you mean by bright? I would say the opposite... darkness.

Interview with Bondage Fairies

And what is this personally for you? For example members of «Gwar» had their history connected with their images and it was something like real show. Can you say that your images create whole picture of music during the work?

In 2005 my alter ego Nebula Rainbow, who actually wrote «he-man», accidently got killed by Elvis Creep who since that day took his place. Our images or alter egos are much more interesting then our Clark Kent lives. Who wants to be Clark Kent when you can be superman? Not me. Not us. Also we are glad to not being able to see each other’s faces.

Your last single was realized three years ago. At that moment he made a lot of noise in musical industry. He should be a part of new album you’re going to release after the third Bondage Fairies. From that moment you’ve started such a «period of silence» – what’s wrong with this unreleased work?

I don't understand the question completely.. our latest real/physical single, «Garbage Indiebands» was released 8 years ago. I don't really like or count digital releases. The period of silence is due to a mix of life events, time, the reptilian agenda and of course money. We kinda don't wanna put out more songs before the album release. It's more fun to wait until all are finished and then put them all out as an album instead of giving out one song at the time and then get the shit catapult about that more then half of the album is already out on the internet and that the songs are old. The silence is soon to be over though. Three songs are already mastered and I work on a daily basis on the rest. Just like herpes, we tend to come back when you least want it.

Your last concert took place practically a year before and after that we haven’t seen any band’s activity. Can you disclose the door of mystery and say something about your upcoming release?

We have a music video done for a song called «San Francisco» just waiting for release. Working daily on the album. Some songs are already mastered.
It's as usual a question about time, money and the boredom of Clark Kent lifes. Release should be in 2016. Album will contain chords and melodies and chords.
